چکیده

By a tournament we mean the outcome of a round-robin tournament in which there are no draws . Such a tournament may be represented by a graph in which the n players are represented by vertices labelled 1, 2, . . . , n, and the outcomes of the games are represented by directed edges so that every pair of vertices is joined by one directed edge . We call such a graph a complete directed graph . One can also represent such a tournament by an nXn matrix T = (t .,) in which t 1~ ij is 1 if i beats j, and 0 otherwise, so that T is a (0, 1) matrix with t . + t„ = 1 for i / j and (by definition) t . . = 0 . 1 3 3 1 11

Feedback Arc Set Problem in Bipartite Tournaments

In this paper we give ratio 4 deterministic and randomized approximation algorithms for the FEEDBACK ARC SET problem in bipartite tournaments. We also generalize these results to give a factor 4 deterministic approximation algorithm for FEEDBACK ARC SET problem in multipartite tournaments. © 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A Recurrence for Bounds on Dominating Sets in k-Majority Tournaments

A k-majority tournament is realized by 2k−1 linear orders on the set of vertices, where a vertex u dominates v if u precedes v in at least k of the orders. Various properties of such tournaments have been studied, among them the problem of finding the size of a smallest dominating set. It is known that 2-majority tournaments are dominated by 3 vertices and that k-majority tournaments are domina...

Hardness of subgraph and supergraph problems in c-tournaments

Problems like the directed feedback vertex set problem have much better algorithms in tournaments when compared to general graphs. This motivates us to study a natural generalization of tournaments, named c-tournaments, and see if the structural properties of these graphs are helpful in obtaining similar algorithms. c-tournaments are simple digraphs which have directed paths of length at most c...

HAMILTON PATHS IN TOURNAMENTS AND A PROBLEM OF McMULLEN ON PROJECTIVE TRANSFORMATIONS IN R

An upper bound for McMullen's problem on projective transformations in R is derived from Redei's classical theorem on Hamilton paths in tournaments.

Approximation Schemes for the Betweenness Problem in Tournaments and Related Ranking Problems

We design the first polynomial time approximation schemes (PTASs) for the Minimum Betweenness problem in tournaments and some related higher arity ranking problems. This settles the approximation status of the Betweenness problem in tournaments along with other ranking problems which were open for some time now. The results depend on a new technique of dealing with fragile ranking constraints a...

Fixing Balanced Knockout and Double Elimination Tournaments

Balanced knockout tournaments are one of the most common formats for sports competitions, and are also used in elections and decision-making. We consider the computational problem of finding the optimal draw for a particular player in such a tournament. The problem has generated considerable research within AI in recent years. We prove that checking whether there exists a draw in which a player...
